During Summer over 70% of our water consumed is used in the garden. Everyday in the average Perth household approximately 920 litres of water is consumed. As the graph shows, even though this is a relatively good year, through deforestation and climate change since 1976 Perths average rainfall has been 12-15% lower than in the preceding 75 years. This has contributed to a much more significant decline in runoff in our surface water catchments and recharge to our groundwater resources., and our demand for water is still increasing. Currently our dams hold only 32.1% of their full capacity.
Using recycled water can help reduce this pressure. In some cases recycled water offers more than just environmental benefits. For example, treated wastewater contains nutrients that can be recycled by plants, reducing fertiliser costs and making it perfect for irrigation. Simple steps, such as making your garden waterwise can make a significant difference to your water use. Although to address this situation, the State Water Strategy has set a target of reusing 20% of our treated waste water sources by 2012, Western Australia remains significantly behind what many other countries are doing overseas. Come and be part of the slution rather than being part of the problem. All are welcome to learn via theory and practice and be inspired to implement water saving methods before the dry seasons. Check out ( and help install) sub-terrainian reticulation systems, header tanks, under house water collection systems and greywater recycling.
THE FACILITATORS Jonathan Bastiens has a long experience with installation and maintenance of garden reticulation programs in Western Australia and South Australia. He worked as a long term volunteer for City Farm for the last 5 years. John has also runs a small business Darragh Cleaning and Gardening Services and has installed reticulation systems as a part of this business. John Croft was involved in installing a Grey Water System and Reticulation System at Gaia House, co-organising with Martin Ander of MUPPETS, at Murdoch University a Grey Water recycling system installation workshop. John continues to be active in community building and environmental activism.
This workshop is dedicated to the memory of Deep Ecologist and Activist, Vivienne Elanta, Co-Founder of the Gaia Foundation of Western Australia. Vivienne dedicated herself to establishing the waterwise systems at Gaia House. Any surplus proceeds of this workshop will go to the Vivienne Elanta Memorial Fund, to support Social, Political and Environmental Activism in WA.
