A global revolution is underway. In countless, unsung ways we are turning from the self-devouring consumerist society and preparing the ground for a life-sustaining civilization. A key feature of this Great Turning is rediscovery of our interconnectedness with all life-forms, and the power that this deep ecology provides us for the healing of our world. In these days together we will learn how to tap this power in our own lives.

"You sent out beyond your recall,
Go to the limits of your longing"

Rainer Maria Rilke

About the Facilitators

Joanna Macy is the pioneering teacher of the Work that Reconnects, known worldwide in movements for peace, justice and ecological sanity. As an ecophilosopher and trainer she interweaves Buddhism, systems theory, and deep ecology. Building on 4 decades of activism, her ground breaking experiential work brings forth courage and community for the co-creating of a life sustaining society. Since her first workshops in Australia in 1985, when she created the Council of All Beings with John Seed, her collaboration with Australian activists has brought enduring mutual benefit. Joanna's books include Coming Back to Life, World as Lover World as Self, Thinking Like a Mountain (with John Seed), Rilke's Book of Hours, Mutual Causality, Dharma and Development and her memoirs Widening Circles.

Fran Macy, director of the Centre for Safe Energy, and co-founder of the US Institute for Deep Ecology, is a cross cultural organiser and trainer, leading the Work that Reconnects in Europe, Asia and North America. For eight years in India and Africa, he managed appropriate technology programs for the Peace Corps. A specialist in Russian culture and history, Fran works closely with environmental and anti-nuclear activists in the former Soviet Union. He helps them create strong citizen networks, to overcome the legacy of isolation, passivity and pollution left behind with a centralised, growth driven industrial system. In 2002, Fran received jointly with a leading Russian scientist-activist the Life-Long Achievement Award from the Nuclear Free Future fund for "decades of building bridges between the peace and environmental movements in Russia and America"

In A Nutshell

The Work That Reconnects equips us to perceive and take part in the Great Turning, the epochal shift from the industrial growth society to a life-sustaining society. It is the great and necessary adventure of our era.

This first-ever thirty day event will be an island in time, where people experienced in the Work That Reconnects will deepen their response to the call of the Great Turning. As the global corporate economy spins ever more out of control, many of us, blessed by this work, are eager to harvest the insights and strengths that a sustained immersion in it can yield. The month-long span, removed from the duties and pressures of our daily lives, will let us open more fully to the power of our deep ecology: our living connections with all beings through space and time.

During our time together we will move through the full lunar cycle maintaining attention from full moon to full moon to permit us to enter Deep Time. In contrast to our society's addiction to speed and short-term thinking, we will inhabit vaster stretches of time, see our lives in wider context. Our ancient evolutionary journey will become more real to us, and future generations will become more real to us as well, helping us to understand what they need us to do now. This Deep Time work brings buoyancy and staying power for the long haul.

The Location

Australia is a perfect setting for this experience. Because of its unique blend of ancient landforms and the Dreamtime of aboriginal cultures, its distinctive history and innovative activism, Joanna has called Australia "a seed pod for the future."

Western Australia is a third of the continent, bringing together an unrivalled series of landforms and landscapes for the visitor. Perth, the capital is a modern city of about 1.3 million people. It is the most isolated city of its size on the planet. The rest of the state has only 400,000 occupants, located mainly in the south west. The city is on the edge of the Yilgarn Kraton, which includes the oldest rocks yet found on Earth. The south west of Western Australia, is the 9th most biologically diverse place on Earth, and its coastal reefs rank 6th on Earth, making the area the most biologically unique place on the planet.

Our time together will be spent at the Cove, in Denmark, where the inlet meets the forest on the south coast. We will live in exquisitely handcrafted and beautifully furnished chalets, amongst ancient karri, tingle and jarrah forest. For information on the Cove, and additional information on the region, please check here. Free time will give us access to beaches, and other wonderful sites of Dreamtime significance.

All accommodation and meal costs are included in the price. We will be fully catered for with fine vegetarian food of the highest quality. There is a limit of 34 places available.

Please let us know if you have any food allergies in advance so that we can take your needs into account.

Introducing the Creation Team

"My journey as a mother and as an educationalist, and recently as a grandmother and healer, has spanned the globe and linked me with many cultures and environments. My abiding love remains the Australian desert and the forests of the south west, where I have now made my home. Seven years ago at a workshop with Joanna Macy in Denmark, I found in Systems Theory and the Work that Reconnects a way to articulate and experience my embeddedness in time and space which transformed my world. Exciting vistas and ways of being continue to emerge and unfold through this work, and I am convinced that it provides the way forward for the 21st century."
Janet Ristic

"Thirty four people for thirty days of the work that reconnects. Wow! What possibilities for the Earth! And here am I being honoured to play a part in bringing the seed of this journey to fruition. That is what I call being blessed. The Work that Reconnects guides me and inspires me in my work as a therapist and activist and fulfils my commitment to a sustainable and joy filled future."
Lynda Stella Maris

"The possibility for taking the Work that Reconnects into new and more profound levels, and so accelerating the great turning is what attracted me to this project. As a parent and grandparent, I can find no better way to leave the world in a better state than it would otherwise be, than by using my time and energy to create such an initiative for others. As a professional community builder I am looking forward to our 30 day community together."
John Croft

"As a mother and grandmother I have a deep, deep commitment to the future and wellbeing of all beings. I came to the Work that Reconnects more than 12 years ago, which nourishes and sustains me as an activist in my work for the Great Turning. Some of my many passions are building frog ponds, creating wildlife habitats in my local suburb and facilitating Deep Ecology workshops with my beloved. It is indeed a great honour and delight to be a part of this wonderful journey/gathering with fellow Bodhisattvas from many different places and callings."
Vivienne Elanta
