DEEP TIME AND
THE ECOLOGICAL SELF

An Experiential Deep Ecology Workshop

Held at Milmeray, Gidgeganup
from Thursday 2nd to Sunday 5th December 2004

    THIS WORKSHOP IS ABOUT.....

….…exploring Deep Time and its connection to the Ecological Self. This work affirms our fundamental interconnectedness with each other and with the vast expanses of time. This involves a combining of the mystical with the practical and the pragmatic, transcending dualistic separateness, alienation, and fragmentation. Deep Time processes, rituals, and guided meditations, developed by Joanna Macy, will help us to reinhabit vaster expanses of time. With a healthier relationship to time we will have the opportunity to SLOW DOWN, attuning to longer rhythms of the Ecological Self, which allows us to experience time in a saner fashion.

    WHAT IS DEEP TIME?

Present western lifestyles have radically altered our experience of time. Driven by economics and technology, decisions are made at lightning speed, largely for short-term benefits. This comes at a cost of disconnecting us with the rhythms of nature, as well as from the past and the future. Such a relationship to time is very destructive to the quality of our lives and of the living body of the earth. During our time together we will explore "Deep Time" through reconnecting with past and future generations.

Other ways of seeing and experiencing time are possible. Cyclic time, and Dreamtime, give us ways to contact to Deep Time that enable us to get in touch with sources of strength and inspiration from the far past and our far future.

    WHAT IS THE ECOLOGICAL SELF?

We are all familiar with our everyday sense of "self", the individual identity, the "I" - the person who thinks and acts in the world. On this "I" we construct our strategies for survival, the notion around which we focus our instincts for self-preservation, our needs for self-approval, and the boundaries of our self-interest. This conventional notion of self is the one with which we have been raised and conditioned by mainstream culture, which is limiting in our everyday interaction with the world, denying us from reaching our full potential.

It is through the self-actualising discovery of our interdependence with the world that we liberate the power of our deep caring, and our experience of self becomes expanded far beyond the narrow self-ego. The discovery of the eco-self restores a balance between the needs of the individual and his or her human and more-than-human communities.

When our actions are formed from within a larger, deeper Ecological Self - with the authority of the Deep Time of our planet's evolution behind us, then we are filled with new determination and perseverance. We experience a deepening identification with the Earth, and a renewal of energy to work for our own individual and collective healing.
